The new egg crate-style grille is an easy way to tell the model apart from those of the previous two years. Just like the previous year, Nova Super Sport sales continued to rise. Under the hood of the Nova was a bevy of options.
While the 90 horsepower cubic-inch four cylinder was available, it was too underpowered, and not a popular choice. Once again, the six-cylinder engine options revolved around the cubic-inch Turbo-Thrift engine delivering horsepower and the cubic-inch Turbo-Thrift engine that delivered an increase of power to horsepower. This engine came with multiple horsepower ratings, and in non-SS cars, delivered or horsepower, depending on whether the engine was equipped with a two- or four-barrel carburetor. When the cubic-inch V8 was ordered in a Super Sport, it came with a four-barrel carburetor and an extra five horsepower, giving it This was probably the result of the different air filter housing that was used.
On a sour note, it was the end of an era for Nova fans, as was the last year the cubic-inch V8 was available in the Nova. The first big-block offered horsepower, while the L78 version of the cubic-inch engine, delivered horsepower. The L78 actually displaced cubic-inches this year, and sported a new intake manifold. While it still carried a Holley carburetor, the intake was reconfigured to clear the lower hood lines on other Chevrolet models. The final year of the third-generation Nova was also the final year the cubic-inch big-block was available in the car.

The Chevelle did have better driving characteristics with the addition of more aggressive tires, and front disc-brakes.
A new model was introduced, the Concours, which was merely a station wagon with wood grain sides. The Deluxe did however, offer different interior colors and more expressive trim. Both were offered as two and four-door sedans, while the Deluxe had the added option of a four-door wagon. The AIR system consisted of the air pump, a fuel mixture-control valve, air manifold tubes, and air injection tubes one per cylinder. Filtered air was drawn through the engine, through the PCV valve, and into the intake manifold.
Inthere were seven available engine choices when ordering the Chevelle. However, there was a new choice for those wanting the six cylinder engine, as buyers could now get the ci version with horsepower.
While the four-barrel equipped ci engine was also dropped, a ci engine was still available, but only with the Rochester two barrel carburetor. With horsepower, the was handily choked in the power department. RPO L30 got you a ci engine with horsepower, or by stepping up to an L79 engine, you got a delivered horsepower. The L79 engine featured larger valves, a compression ratio of Be it good or bad, saw some revisions made to the ci engine lineup. The base ci engine RPO L35still boasted horsepower, and still used a cast-iron intake manifold with a single Quadrajet carburetor.
There are rumors that a Holley carburetor did get placed on some horsepower engines. A depressing announcement for Chevelle fans in was the announcment that the L34 ci engine got a reduction in power output.
To add insult to injury, GM deleted the L78 ci engine from the Chevelle lineup.
Both of these changes were a result of a new GM rule governing the horsepower guidelines for all cars except the Corvette. That being said, it has been reported that approximately cars did receive the L78 engine as a dealer-installed option.

Though the fender emblems read "," the actual, canted-valve Turbo Jet beast under the hood could have been one of three very distinct versions with anywhere between and "rated" horsepower.
This made things risky for would-be stoplight challengers sizing up the SS in the next lane. Though every SS Chevelle featured a power dome hood, rode on an extra-beefy bolt rear axle, and had dual exhaust, those visual tips were of no use in determining if, say, your Magnum, GT, or Tri-power was up to the particular job at hand.
Successful contenders learned to close their eyes and. By their distinctive clatter the solid lifters fitted to the top-tier L78 would make themselves known. Lesser and hp s didn't "make the click" since GM fitted them with low-maintenance hydraulic lifters—and lower compression, milder cam timing, Here, a Road Runner or Firebird stood a good chance of victory.
As for the top dog L78, every one came with a hot solid-lifter cam, A virtual twin to the first big-block engine offering in Corvette, where advertising forces nudged output up to hp, the L78 would later share cylinder heads and camshaft with solid-lifter Corvette s and the mighty LS6 Chevelle engine of Lesser muscle simply wasn't in the same league. But looking back, how much power did a stock L78 really make?
All too often, day-two aftermarket bolt-ons obscured their true potency, and plenty of folks credit second timeslips to L78s they'd forgotten were bolstered with such go-faster add-ons as headers, nonstock intake manifolds, and cam swaps. For this story we hooked up with R. Auto Machine in Ludlow, Massachusetts, where a customer's L78 Chevelle engine was being refurbished and then dyno validated.

From the factory the engine used a 4. The stock block and crankshaft were machined to Borowski's specs and re-used in this build.
Carter has a numbers-matching Chevelle SS that the engine came from; it will find a home back in that vehicle when its restoration is complete. The story behind the Chevelle, however, is an interesting one. It sat there for almost nineteen years while he was going through this divorce before he sold it to me.
When the car was parked, the engine had been hurt and was out of the car sitting in storage, and when Carter acquired the works, he needed to go through the entire package to return the engine to its former glory. The hydraulic roller camshaft, timing set, and aluminum roller rocker arms are among the valvetrain pieces supplied by Howards Cams.
The camshaft grind used in Calvin Carter's big-block is just one of many that Borowski keeps on the shelf. Borowski's Ken McCaul raves about the performance of the company's camshafts and says they are a big reason why Borowski's engines perform as well as they do. A combination of Clevite main bearings and King connecting rod bearings are used, as in this particular application the Borowski team has found them to perform best.
The stock connecting rods were reconditioned and should provide years of service in this application. A full complement of Howards Cams valvetrain gear is used from the cam to the roller rocker arms and everything in between. Howards 1. Fel-Pro intake gaskets and stock-replacement. The target is not just inner-city kids; Carter tells us that anyone who wants to learn how to restore cars from bumper to bumper will be able to find a home at the mentoring program. Doing something positive for the community—especially one as hard-pressed to find positive role models as Chicago is—shows that Carter and his colleagues are resourceful and have a solid plan.
